A short history of the saddlery

Saddlery is an age-old trade dating back to the 13th century, a period marked by the development of the equestrian art. Originally, saddlery was mainly applied to harnessing and equestrian equipment, for horse transport and agriculture. Over the years, saddlery has extended its scope to include the design of stuffed furniture, responding to society’s changing needs while preserving its heritage. Today, saddlery remains a symbol of leather craftsmanship. There are two specialities within the saddlery craft.

Saddler harness maker and Saddler garnisher

The harness saddler (also known as the saddler-bourrelier) designs, creates, maintains, and repairs pieces of leather equestrian equipment such as saddles, harnesses, girths, etc. This craftsman masters the art of creating comfortable pieces, while reflecting craftsmanship and meticulous detail.

The saddler upholsterer’s specialty is the restoration and creation of leather seats, sofas, and other furniture for the automotive, aeronautics and marine industries. Thanks to his skills, he can give new life to old pieces while designing contemporary creations, combining comfort and aesthetics in each creation.

Shazak Workshop

Sofia Haccoun-Zakabloukowa created her workshop in 2016, right after studies as a saddler-harness-maker and upholsterer. Atelier Shazak specialises in the art of leatherwork for harnessing, fashion, design pieces, furniture, cinema, and entertainment. In her workshop, now located at JAD (Jardin des Metiers d’Art et du Design) in Sevres, Sofia works with leathers sourced exclusively in Europe.
