Sophie Mouton-Perrat and Frédéric Guibrunet design papier-mâché sculptures and lighting. After studying applied arts at École Estienne, Sophie went to ENSAAMA. At the same time, she developed an interest in paper and folding, and finally decided to dedicate her career to this medium. Frédéric’s path to paper was less straightforward. After studying chemistry and spending six years in the sector, he developed a passion for paper, learning the techniques during trips to Europe and Asia. In 2007, their paths crossed at an exhibition dedicated to paper. A year later, Frédéric joined Sophie’s studio, marking the start of a beautiful collaboration. Together, they create collections of lighting, sculptures and poetic accessories inspired by nature, fairytales, and films. Their work can be seen in the windows of luxury brands such as Van Cleef and Arpels and Dior, or in cultural institutions such as the Opéra Garnier and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. 2022 – Supported by the Michelangelo Foundation, Homo Faber Guide. 2018 – Laureates of the Fondation Banque Populaire. 2015 – Prix Fil vert Maison & Objet. 2008 – Laureates Jeunes Créateurs Ateliers d’Art de France; Best collection Award, Interior Design Show, Toronto.
Sophie and Frédéric work together, combining their creativity and know-how by re-using scraps of paper from their sculptures. An example of their boldness was the latest project, a 3D printer used to create the skeleton of a lighting system capable of evolving in open air.
Sophie and Frédéric believe that this know-how is much more than just a medium. Driven by the desire to pass on their common passion, they are constantly expanding their initiatives. More than 500 papermaking workshops have been taught by Frédéric since 2000, and he also encourages the public to be more aware of the importance of recycling materials. Meanwhile, Sophie shares her knowledge through paper-maché workshops. She has also published a book about her know-how, “Les Initiations – Papier Maché”. Every year, they welcome trainees into their workshop.
The Foundation helped Sophie and Frédéric to maintain their business while responding to the requirements of their discipline.
