Charlotte Font and Charlotte Romani have met at the Manufacture de la Savonnerie of the Mobilier National. They both have graduated with a bachelor’s degree and a master specialised in carpet and tapestry weaving from between 2017 to 2021.
Passionate by this know-how, they created their own textile craft workshop specialised in the Savonnerie technique in 2022. It is now the only one of its kind in France outside the Mobilier National. Their made-to-measure work is aimed to interior architects and designers, along with artists and designers. More recently, they have tried the world of fashion.
2023 – Prix de la Jeune Création, Atelier d’Art de France
At the Font & Romani workshop, they work four-handed to create carpets that they transform from their original purpose. The tapestries are exposed on both sides, revealing the techniques and work of the weavers. The warp threads are an integrated part of the work. Their creations, made over a long period of time, become veritable artpiece.
All their pieces are designed with the aim of durability and are fully restorable. The Charlotte(s) choose high-quality materials to guarantee the durability of their creations, and therefore of their know-how. The wool and linen they use are both sourced and natural.
Charlotte Font and Charlotte Romani practise this unique know-how in their workshop. They created it with the aim of opening it up to the public. Today, their aim is to take on trainees to pass on the specific techniques of Savonnerie.
“Exchange is a way of questioning and learning more about our approach to our know-how. That’s why we’re so keen to include new hands and new perspectives at the very heart of our design and manufacturing process.”
In 2023, the craftswomen were supported by the Fondation Rémy Cointreau in the acquisition of a high loom. Thanks to this new tool, they will be able to train an apprentice on a long-term basis.
